How To Create More Precious Time By Being Organized

Have you ever felt that you didn't have time to make a shopping list, so you just decided to 'wing it' at the supermarket, only to have to go all the way back a second time to pick up those things that you forgot? And if there were more than 3 or 4 forgotten items, I'll bet that you learned your lesson for that day and took a list with you the second time, right?

Life is so much easier if we don't have to back-track, retrace our steps, and do things two or three times over. The fewer problems we have on our mind, the more clearly we think, and the more effectively we use our time.

If you can adopt a system within your home and life that minimizes the amount of time you spend sweating the small stuff, and maximizes time spent on more important things, then you'll be amazed at how much more time you have, and how much more you can get done.

Below are some tips on how you can achieve this.

1. Keep a diary/calendar with you at all times.

These days the technology we carry ensures that it is easy to keep on top of our lives. Use your phone's address book, so you've got everyone's details available to you all the time. Use the calendar, ensuring that it reminds you about your upcoming activities at least an hour before they begin. Use the diary or notepad function to regularly write up lists.

2. Plan to plan.

Allocate 15 minutes each day to prepare what you are going to do for the following day, as well as capturing appointments you need to keep which are a week, a month or even a couple of months away. The best time to do this is in the evening when you are relaxed and can consider your schedule.

3. Try a short list.

If you are truly awful at planning, I suggest you try the sticky note short list technique. I do this on a daily basis. I have 2 pieces of paper stuck to my screen: one on each side. The first has three personal items to complete today and the second has three professional items to be completed today. Once you've successfully finished these activities, throw the paper in the trash and feel fantastic!

4. Use 'batching' to become more efficient.

If you feel that you are constantly running around in circles and never really feel a sense of achievement, you should try completing tasks in batches. As I mentioned earlier, it would be completely ineffective to walk into the supermarket, buy three items and then walk out, only to have to come back later in the day to do more shopping. The same goes for other tasks. If it's time to pay your bills, pay them all at once. Get in to the swing of it and get this task done faster. If it is time to clean the house, carry out all of your cleaning in one go. It may take a while, but you'll be focused and surprisingly, you will finish much sooner than if you decided to break it up and do something completely different.

There are only 24 hours in a day and we sleep for quite a few of those, so make the effort to become more efficient and you'll be amazed at how much time you will be able to free up every day.
