Book Summary - 100 Simple Secrets of Happy People - Written by David Niven

I am pleased to profile this book because people do not spend enough time studying happiness. All endeavors in life really come down to what makes you happy. Happiness is a bit nebulous simply because people don't define it explicitly for themselves. Just like any endeavor, happiness needs to be studied and pursued. People study and get educated on all types of subjects and spend years doing it. I am suggesting that the study of happiness will yield great results and people should put the effort into it.

Why is this important to me?

If I was spending my precious time listening to this video then the first question I would ask is - Why is this important to me?

This is really a question of opposites. Think about being really unhappy. Everything is far more difficult in every aspect of your life. Relationships are much harder to maintain if you are not a happy person or do not understand what could make you happy. Are you where you want to be? When I ask this question to people I work with, they usually give me a blank stare. They genuinely want to be happy but have not really pondered the idea on how to attain it and what it means for them to be happy.

How do you define happiness? This question seems simple but the layers of the onion need to be peeled back to really understand what makes you happy. Some things can be conflicting. Example: Let's suppose traveling for work makes you happy and having a family also makes you happy. If you are not careful in your true definition of happiness, then these two things can be conflicting and cause pain.

There are several salient points in 100 Happiness secrets but we are going to focus on two in this summary. We will look at three secrets for each of the two areas - Learning and Relationships.

1. Your life has purpose and meaning - I put this under learning because this needs to be studied and understood. A starting point is critical for this mental exercise. What is your life's purpose?

2. Use a Strategy for Happiness - In the business world, organizations spend a lot of time defining their purpose and meaning and then implement a strategy to achieve it. The same thing needs to happen for you. Think of the strategy as your retirement plan for achieving happiness. Once you put your head around this idea then happiness will start to crystallize for you.

3. Your goals should be aligned with each other. This is important because conflict causes pain. If you think in terms of attraction, two magnets will either attract or repel each other depending upon if they are aligned. This really comes down to investing your time and energy into things that complement each other to achieve your happiness.

Relationships make the world go around. People are social animals and have to connect with other people to survive. According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Belonging and Love needs (family, relationships, and affection) is the third rung up the pyramid to self-actualization.

1. Cultivate Friendships - Invest time in friendships. If you feel close to other people, you are four times more likely to feel good about yourself than if you do not feel close to anyone.

2. Every relationship is different - Some relationships are more difficult than others. Don't let this impact your quest to develop strong relationships throughout your life. Happy people accept their imperfect relationships.

3. Cherish Animals - This may seem a bit weird but pets provide strong relationships for people. Those with a pet are 22 % more likely to feel satisfied than those without one.

I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days. I highly recommend that you give some thought to being happy and defining what that means for you. This book is a quick read but has excellent content based on research.
